Associate Diploma in Maritime Studies

* The Associate Diploma in Maritime Studies- Able Seafarer Deck

The Associate Diploma in Maritime Studies – Able Seafarer Deck programme incorporates the requirements of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for Watch Keeping Ratings and Able Seafarers in the Deck Department. This programme is a technical and vocational education programme that encompasses the following STCW requirements for knowledge consisting of:

  • Table A-II/4- Specifications of minimum standards of competence for ratings forming part of a navigational watch.

  • Table A-II/5- Specifications of minimum standards of competence of ratings as Able Seafarer Deck.

Trainees following Transport General Authority (TGA) approved programme qualifies for a reduction in sea service as per arrangements in STCW Convention Regulation II/4 2.2.2 for obtaining a Navigational Watch Rating Certificate. Trainees will further qualify for a reduction in sea service as per arrangements in STCW Convention Regulation II/5 2.3.2 for obtaining certification of ratings as Able Seafarer Deck.

Whilst at NMA students will complete mandatory STCW additional short courses that are required for the TGA award of a relevant certificate of competency.

Trainees are required to complete onboard training in accordance with the Training Record Book (TRB) during the sea phase. Completion of onboard training is an integral and critical component of the training programme. The TRB specifies tasks are completed at Watch Rating and Able Seafarer level.

Sea phases consist of accrual of sea service and completion of onboard training. Practical skills are tested onboard and authorised ship staff assess progress. A company-designated Shipboard Training Officer supervises onboard training. On successful completion of minimum sea time requirements, each trainee will undergo a TRB assessment process and complete the remaining STCW short courses.

* The Associate Diploma in Maritime Studies- Able Seafarer - Engine

The Associate Diplmoa in Maritime Studies – Able Seafarer - Engine Programme incorporates the requirements of STCW for Watch Keeping Ratings and Able Seafarers in the Engine Department. This programme is a technical and vocational education programme that encompasses the following STCW requirements for knowledge consisting of:

  • Table A-III/4- Specifications of minimum standards of competence for ratings forming part of an Engineering Watch.

  • Table A-III/5- Specifications of minimum standards of competence of ratings as Able Seafarer Engine.

Trainees following this TGA approved programme will qualify for a reduction in sea service as per arrangements in STCW Convention Regulation III/4 2.2.2 for obtaining an Engineering Watch Rating Certificate. Trainees will further qualify for a reduction in sea service as per arrangements in STCW Convention Regulation III/5 2.3.2 for obtaining certification of ratings as Able Seafarer - Engine.

High School Graduate- Scientific with 65% aggregate

English Language

Minimum IELTS academic band 3.5 or equivalent

Placement test

All applicants are required to pass an  NMA placement test, which will be conducted prior to confirmation of placement
